![]() ![]() In other words, it's a much simpler production compared to the dozen or so musicians who played on Ferguslie Park, but what's not there in manpower is more than made up for by high energy and spare, purposeful arrangements.Īs for the Rafferty/Egan duo, my old friend Bud Scoppa put it best on a "best of" compilation issued in 1978 where in the annotation he wrote, "Vocally, Egan and Rafferty were pop chameleons with the uncanny ability to blend the gristle of Dylan and the glistening brightness of McCartney into vocals of dazzling character." The band here consisted of Joe Egan on vocals and keyboards, Rafferty on vocals and guitar, Paul Pilnick, lead guitar, Tony Williams (not the drummer), bass and Rod Coombes, drums. (Rafferty was Scottish) and the recording venue was in the U.K., this was most likely an A&M America deal, which explains the fabled Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller songwriting and production team's involvement. on Transatlantic and in America on Blue Thumb. Rabid Rafferty fans, though, still clamor for Ferguslie Park, Right or Wrong and Can I Have My Money Back?, the latter solo album released a year before this album in the U.K. This album when first released was not a big seller and Rafferty was off the charts and out of most people's minds until years later when he hit it big with "Baker Street"-another unlikely hit that had for its hook, of all things, a saxophone solo. But few make the move beyond the song to the rest of Rafferty's repertoire. Once in your head, the tune is difficult to get out, aided and abetted by the "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" line that resonates well today. Oh, sure, "Stuck in the Middle" was an unlikely hit when first released by A&M in 1972 and later found its way into Quentin Tarrantino's "Reservoir Dogs" where the bouncy, anthemic, Dylanesque record company exec knock reached a new audience. Just in case you haven’t heard it yet, I’ve attached the hit song down below.Gerry Rafferty has long been under-appreciated. “Stuck in the Middle” isn’t just a good song, it’s a a representation of what it means to chase after your dreams and continue swinging until you hit that home run. What started off as a simple melody has quickly grown into the reason why Tai will be able to make music for a living for years to come. The most intriguing part about this up and coming star is the simple fact that he’s just getting started. I think it’s also important to point out that “Stuck in the Middle” was Tai’s very first song under his discography, which leaves room for so many more tracks and so much potential that is yet to be tapped. The song is spectacular as I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since listening for the first time. It’s one thing to accidentally blow up, but there is no coincidence or good luck that could be attributed to Tai’s success. For most hit songs, it takes months, maybe even years to reach 1 million streams, but in the case of Tai Verdes, it only took a matter of days and now he’s at 2 million thanks to its catchy/infectious nature and the driving force of Tik-Tok. If you haven’t heard of the viral hit, “Stuck in the Middle”, I urge you to stop reading this article, stream it and then continue reading…then stream it some more. This is something Tai was aware of and executed to perfection. With Billions of people scrolling through the pages of Tik-Tok, it is extremely naive to stray away from the platform is you’re an aspiring artist. ![]() That smarter grind ended up materializing in the form of an app that everyone around the world has come to know and love. When most would quit due to this fact, it only inspired Tai to work harder and grind smarter. The 24-year-old singer/songwriter has always had talent, but with 50,000 songs dropping each day on streaming platforms, it’s easy for a lot of talent to go unnoticed from time to time. In the case of Tai Verdes, there couldn’t be anything truer. It seems like the stories that start off with a setback or unexpected outcome are always the ones that have the greatest endings. Before his Tik-Tok fueled hit went completely viral, the Southern California native was just a regular guy who had been cut from various singing shows trying to find his breakthrough. ![]()
